During Monday’s episode of Gossip Girl, the CW gave us a brief first look at the highly anticipated (but still untitled) GG prequel, (which, in case you haven’t heard, is an '80-themed spinoff that chronicles the early years of Lily Van Der Woodsen’s life in Los Angeles. In the preview for the show's May 11th episode, we also got our first look at Shiloh Fernandez, the Latino actor I introduced to you a few weeks ago, playing Owen, a popular club kid who is one of Lily’s more serious love interests. The trailer shows Owen taking Lily to a hot club where a very talented band (guest stars “No Doubt), is playing a cover of Adam and the Ants’ ‘80’s song “Stand and Deliver.” At the club, Owen knows everyone who’s drinking, dancing and doing drugs, and when Lily asks him why he’s so popular, he explains: “When you don’t have a lot of family at home, you got to find it somewhere else.”
As I watched the trailer, I couldn't help wonder where I've seen this kind of character before—a popular, rebellious ladies man who is dark, brooding, mysterious and doesn't play by anyone else's rules? And then, suddenly, it hit me: He's just like Chuck Bass! Except that he's Latin, doesn't wear silly bow ties, talk in a weird “I’m Batman” voice, or have millions of dollars. Still! From now on, lets just call him the Latino Chuck Bass, shall we?
Don’t forget to check out the May 11 episode of Gossip Girl to get a good look at Shiloh. In the meantime, enjoy these clips!
