Casting Scoops: Gina Torres Heads to "Gossip Girl"

Yesterday, I told you about 25 shows starring Latinos that are not to be missed, and today I am happy to report that even more Latinos will be gracing your TVs this fall!

Over at the CW, they’re starting to really show us some love! After casting my girl Joanna Garcia as Bree Buckley (Chase Crawford’s new novia) on Gossip Girl, the network has now tapped Laurence Fishburne’s Cuban wife, Gina Torres, to appear in a recurring role on GG as Jessica Szohr’s mom, reports. Szohr, who is of African-American and Hungarian-descent, plays Vanessa on the show. Not much is known about Gabriela Abrams (Torres's character), "but she is described as being warm and outgoing, which will certainly be a change of pace for this show, not exactly known as the paragon of parental virtue.” This mother-of-the-year role sounds like a great one for Torres, an actress whose previous credits include roles on hit shows Alias and Firefly. Maybe now they can get Laurence Fishburne to play Vanessa’s pops?!

The CW will also be welcoming Project Runway judge Nina Garcia to their network this fall. She will appear as herself on the fashion-forward new show The Beautiful Life, has learned. Garcia’s guest-starring role on the new series (which stars Mexican actress Sara Paxton) will begin September 23, and Garcia sounds super excited: “The Beautiful Life is an eye-opening show about the inner workings of the modeling industry as seen from the point of view of a fashion insider,” she says. “My cameo involves me throwing a party for a well-known charity and, of course, a lot of drama happens at that party!” I love, love, love that this show (which by the way is pretty-freaking-good) is casting real-life fashion industry icons like Garcia and Zac Posen to tell a realistic story about what the modeling world is actually like.

In more casting news, Amaury Nolasco, 38, who played Fernando Sucre on Fox’s canceled series Prison Break, is joining the cast of NBC’s gritty and smart drama Southland as a series regular. Nolasco, who was born in Puerto Rico to Dominican parents, will play Det. Lydia Adams’s (Regina King) aggressive new partner who “drives her crazy," says the Hollywood Reporter. Only in Hollywood can you go from prisoner to Detective so rapidly!
