American Idol: The Lone Latino

FOX

And then there was one…

As quickly as they advanced to the next round on American Idol, two of the three Latinos in the Top 24 are done, done, done!

During last week’s results show, AI hopefuls Ashley Rodriguez and Joe Muñoz were sent packing,  leaving 24-year-old Andrew Garcia as the sole Latino contender vying for the crown.

So what led to Ashley’s shocking demise and Joe’s disappointing downfall?  A much maligned performance by the former and lack of exposure for the latter—at least in my opinion.

During Tuesday’s elimination, Ashley—once considered a front-runner for the title— completely unraveled while covering Leona Lewis’ “Happy.”  The 22-year-old Chelsea, Massachusetts, native got no love from the judges; Simon even called it “clumsy” and told her he thought she was going backwards. But now, she’s just going home!

On Wednesday, Joe performed Jason Mraz's "You and I Both" and wowed Ellen, Randy and Kara.  But Simon called the 20-year-old Huntington Park, California, native’s performance “forgettable” and America seemed to agree.  Personally, I think Joe suffered from a sever lack of camera time. While most of the contestants have received their 15 minutes of fame, Joe was relegated to a mere 10… seconds, that is.  He had one of the strongest performances of the night, but just couldn’t forge that necessary “connection” to America.

Ashley and Joe have great voices and should just look at Allison Iraheta, last year’s final-woman-standing!  The 17-year-old rockera showed demonstrated mad skills while performing her single “Scars” on the results show. Decked out in a hot black dress and lace glove, Allison looked every bit the superstar she’s destined to become, and she didn't win AI either. Totally brilliant!

But at least we’ve still got Andrew, this season’s last hope to become the first Latino to win American Idol. Side note: How is that even possible? Here’s hoping the judge’s favorite can continue winning America’s support. He’s already got mine and I’ve got an unlimited text message plan!
