On last night's 90210, all of the female characters were portrayed as fun, cool chicks with hearts of gold. The male characters, however, weren't quite so lucky. In fact, they were portrayed as selfish, uncompromising, arrogant and sleazy guys who only care about themselves and treat women badly.
Exhibit A: Liam. Last week, we watched Liam manhandle and corrupt Naomi, but this week, the show's resident bad boy decided to take a shot at corrupting Ethan—he encourages the goody two-shoes star athlete to cut English class to hang out at the beach instead, and Ethan surprisingly takes the low road. Naomi wants to come along (she wants to be manhandled some more), but the two guys ignore her, acting like she’s not even there and walking away from her so that she’s left talking to herself. Classy! Later, when Naomi runs into Liam again at the Peach Pitt, and says “hello” to him, that really pisses Liam off (the audacity of this girl! How dare she?). And he unenthusiastically replies, “hello Naomi” in an angry voice and storms off. As he walks away, Naomi ponders what's going on in this mysterious bad boy's tortured psyche.
But Liam isn't the only arrogant, selfish, son of a gun Naomi had to deal with on last night's episode. Her absent father (who acts and looks like a weasel), shows up at her hotel room (yes, she lives at a hotel), and reveals that he has just been hit with a sexual harassment lawsuit that's about to go public and embarrass Naomi big-time. Upon hearing the news, Naomi doesn't cry, shout, or react much at all. She simply rolls her eyes. He's a guy, what could she expect?
Meanwhile, Donna and Kelly (guest stars Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth), were spending all of their time together because neither one of them—through no fault of their own—has a reliable, good man in her life. Kelly reminds us yet again (this time more subtely) that it’s just her and her son Sammy and that Dylan is an absent father. And Donna—who is in L.A. to get away from husband David—had plenty to say about her man’s selfishness and arrogance. While the two longtime besties are waiting to exhale during a night on the town, they accidentally stumble into a lesbian bar, where in keeping with last night’s anti-male episode, there are no men! Once they realize where they are (they catch two girls making out and put two and two together), they still manage to have the best time of their lives.
The good news? There was at least one guy in last night's episode who made my gender look good, and that was Navid (Michael Steger), who spent the entire episode caring for his 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend Adrianna. Navid made sure Adrianna ate healthy foods, and later, in an effort to make her feel better about being a single parent with no money, he even asked her to marry him and promised to take care of her and her baby for the rest of their lives. See ladies, we aren't all bad!
Some other stuff also happened in the episode: Harry and Debbie had a yard sale, which Naomi found oddly hysterical (homegirl needs to visit a comedy club asap!), and Silver struggled to adapt to society after being in the hospital for ONE DAY! I don’t need to tell you this episode was boring, do I?
I want to hear what you think. Did you think 90210 took the man-hating too far, or was it just me? Spill in the comments.
