8 Triple Threats

Latina movie stars like Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz and Eva Mendes stick to what they know best: ¡El cine! Latina TV stars like Judy Reyes and Sara Ramirez stick to what they know best: ¡La televisión! But there are a few rule-breaking Latinas who refuse to commit to only one medium. These women make a movie and follow it up with a recurring role on a hit TV show, star in their own web series, promote a popular product, and later, record a music album. Meet Hollywood’s biggest Latina triple-threats, the lovely ladies who are three times the fun! (Disclaimer: We could not include Jennifer Lopez on this list because the sheer volume of her projects would require an entirely separate list.)

1. Eva Longoria-Parker, 34: Eva might make a whopping $400,000 per episode as one of the stars of ABC’s Desperate Housewives, but that’s not where all of her income comes from. The multi-talented TV star, who serves as the Executive Producer of the ALMA Awards, has also starred in movies of her own (Over Her Dead Body, The Sentinel), and she’s had top endorsement deals with everyone from Bebe Sport to L'Oréal, Hanes, and New York & Co, among others.

2. Selena Gomez, 17: Not only is Selena the star of one of the Disney Channel’s most successful sitcoms, Wizards of Waverly Place, but she is also one of the Queens of TV movies. This year alone, Selena has starred in three successful TV movies: Princess Protection Program (seen by 8.5 million total viewers—the third highest-rated Disney movie of all-time); Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana and ABC Family’s A Cinderella Story (pulled in 5.3 million viewers, making it the No. 1 cable movie across all key demos for the network). But that's not all. The ratings for Wizards convinced Disney to make Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie, which will debut on the Disney Channel on August 28, 2009. And did I mention she also recorded “One and the Same” for Princes Protection Program, four songs on the Wizards soundtrack, and signed a record deal with Hollywood Records? Dayum!

3. Demi Lovato, 16: Selena’s real-life BFF is also no slouch. In addition to sharing the success of Princess Protection Program, Lovato also starred in the 2008 TV movie Camp Rock (opposite the Jonas Brothers), which earned a whopping 10.1 million viewers! And she currently stars in the hit Disney Channel series Sonny With a Chance, and the singer-songwriter’s second studio album, Here We Go Again, was released on June 17, 2009.

4. Kate Del Castillo, 36: Del Castillo ("from the castle" in English) is the perfect last name for Kate, because she rules! The former A-list telenovela star from Mexico has a recurring role as a badass powerful mexicana on Showtime’s hit series Weeds, and she recently signed on to become the new face of L’Oréal cosmetics. Kate has also slowly been evolving into a successful indie movie actress with fine projects like La Misma Luna (opposite America Ferrera) and the very dark indie Julia, opposite Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton. Not to mention that she recently produced and starred in Univision’s web novela Vidas Cruzadas (Crossed Lives), as well as toured Mexico in David Harrower’s acclaimed two-character play Pájaro Negro (Blackbird).

5. Sofía Vergara, 37: This feisty Colombian actress refuses to be just a pretty face—she’s conquering the big screen, the small screen, and the stage all at once! Sofía is set to star in the highly anticipated ABC comedy Modern Family this fall, and she appeared in the 2009 box office smash Madea Goes to Jail. This summer, she also starred as Mama Morton in Broadway’s revival of the hit musical Chicago.

6. Dania Ramirez, 29: Dania (who went to the same high school as I did: Go Tigers!) has starred in movies (Illegal Tender, X-Men: The Last Stand), TV shows (The Sopranos, Heroes) and now she’s adding cover girl to her resume quite literally as the newest face of CoverGirl. The Dominican beauty will be featured in print and television ads beginning in January 2010!

7. Salma Hayek, 42: The second Latina actress in the history of the Oscars to earn an Oscar nomination (for her role as Frida Kahlo in 2002’s Frida), Salma Hayek is a successful film actress who has also become a star on TV, both for her work as the Executive Producer of ABC's hit comedy Ugly Betty, and for her hilarious turn as a funny Puerto Rican nurse on NBC's 30 Rock. The former spokesperson for Revlon also lends her time and money to several charities, and still manages to have time to breast-feed babies in foreign countries. How does she do it?

8. Jamie-Lynn Sigler, 28:  Cubana Jamie-Lynn was once only famous for her role as Meadow Soprano on HBO’s Emmy-award winning series The Sopranos. However, these days the actress is conquering both the small screen, the big screen, and the “jizzed” screen. She’s been playing a version of herself on HBO’s hit comedy Entourage since 2008, and in the fall, she’ll become a regular on ABC’s hit comedy Ugly Betty. She’s also starring in Son of Mourning with Heather Graham, and the mystery/thriller Underbelly slated for 2010. And as we all know, she starred in a hilarious SNL digital short where she kept making men “Jizz in {their} pants.”

Are these ladies triple the fun? Who's your favorite? Think I left someone out? Dish in the comments!
