The 5 Funniest TV Skits of the Decade
| 12/17/2009 - 15:44 | 4 Comments
From Mario Lopez to Christina Aguilera, no one does skits better than Latinos! We are absolutely hilarious. And with 2009 coming to an end in just two weeks, I thought it would be the perfect time to share my picks for the 5 Best Latin Skits of the whole decade. Without further ado, here are my choices for the five most laugh-out-loud funny skits!
1). “Sex and the City”
In an SNL episode hosted by Christina Aguilera, the talented singer portrayed the iconic, the fabulous & the unforgettable Sex and The City character Samantha Jones—and Aguilera’s performance—like Kim Catrall’s in the hit series—became the stuff of legend! Wearing a fabulous blonde wig, Cristina played Samantha as confidently, as sensually and as convincingly as Jones did on the hit show, making it look effortless in the process. Watch her dead-on impression for yourself and marvel at the way Christina manages to channel every aspect of the Samantha character, from the way her voice sounds, to the tone of her voice, to her look, and most impressively: her essence. The best part of the skit? That would have to be when Samantha reveals a big secret: “I have something to tell you all: I’m a dude!” Classic!
2). “Wetback Mountain”
Granted, it's kind of easy to poke fun at Ang Lee’s slow-paced gay cowboy love story, Brokeback Mountain. Having said that, I’ve never seen a funnier, more creative parody of Brokeback than the one co-starring comedian Carlos Mencia and actor Mario Lopez on the stand-up comedy show Mind of Mencia. These two very funny guys turned the show’s central story line—that of a secret affair between two closeted men—into a hilarious parody about two Latino office co-workers who long to be “Wetbacks.” That is, they want to enjoy the outdoors, break open piñatas, and drink Tequilla all day long wearing Ponchos. My favorite scene is where Mencia’s fictional wife accuses, “you don’t go up there to finish reports,” and he replies with: “And you don’t want it from behind anymore.”
Have you ever gone into a fast food burger joint and met a young woman named Bon Qui Qui with long, fake nails and hoola hoop earrings who yells at customers and calls security on them when they have a complicated order? Yeah, neither have I. But after watching the MAD TV skit, “King Burger,” starring Latina Anjelah Johnson, I kind of wish that would happen to me because homegirl is funny! Check her out in this clip and tell me you don’t love how she says the word security ("saKerity!"), and how she does an impromptu rap into the microphone when her fresh-out-of-prison boyfriend makes a stop by the burger joint.
4). “The Chelsea Handler Show.”
Before she got her hit late-night talk show, Chelsea Lately, Chelsea Handler had a show on the E! Network called The Chelsea Handler Show that consisted mostly of skits costarring Handler and her Mexican assistant, Chuy Bravo. All of their skits were funny, but the one that stands out in my mind as being the most memorable is the skit where the irreverent Chelsea visits Chuy’s religious family and things don’t go as smoothly as planned. Check it out:
5). “The History Channel.”
Cristina Aguilera is in another one of my five favorite skits of the decade, ya’ll! I love this SNL skit in which Aguilera plays Abigail Cornelius Steele, a rebellious woman living in 1880’s Boston, Massachusetts who is ahead of her time and living in a man’s world. Abigail is considered to be “outrageous” because she “poses for paintings, rides horses, shoots guns and smokes cigars.”
