Which Is the Only Latin Song to Ever Win an Oscar?

If you guessed anything from West Side Story or Frida, you're wrong!
...Give up?
Well, it wasn't until 2004 when Latinos finally won an Academy Award for Best
Original Song, and the lucky honoree was singer-songwriter Jorge
Drexler (who not surprisingly, is also the only Uruguayan to ever win
an Oscar). Drexler was awarded for "Al Otro Lado del Río," a track from
the Gael Garcia Bernal-starring movie, The Motorcycle Diaries.
Drexler's win was unfortunately a little bittersweet, because Oscar
producers robbed him of the chance to perform the song live and had the
more famous Antonio Banderas cover the song instead, with Carlos
Santana accompanying him on the guitar. Not cool, Academy. What was
cool, though, was seeing Drexler win and express his anger over the
decision to not let him perform in his awesome acceptance speech. Anyone remember it?
The drama between Oscar producers and nominated singers has only gotten worse five years later,
as Peter Gabriel just cancelled his performance at the last-minute when he
was told that he could only perform 60 seconds of his song from
Wall-E. I'm actually happy about this because the song, in my humble
opion, is the most awful, cliche-ridden thing I've heard in years.
Here's hoping that MIA shows up to perform her tunes from Slumdog
Millionaire to shake things up a bit. Or better yet, that she wins!
My crystal ball says that will take at least 50
years for another Latino to win the Best Original Song Oscar. What do you think: over or under?
