Still trying to kick those Monday blues? Girl in a Coma should deliver a caffeine-free jolt. The San Antonio–based trio may have a deep sleep–inducing name (it was inspired by Morissey, after all), but Nina, Phanie and Jenn are certainly not the musical equivalent of Tylenol PM. These Tejanas, who grew up hearing Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth and Smashing Pumpkins, are serious punk rockers.
Have a listen to “Static Mind” from their sophomore album, Trio B.C., and decide for yourself. The song is a fast-paced, guitar-heavy, '80s-influenced kick in the pants.
The video for the single is equally great. Filmed in the band’s hometown, it captures the girls visiting garage sales, signing autographs and play-fighting on the street. I especially enjoyed seeing vocalist Nina get rubbed with an egg, which, according to an old Latin superstition, is a healing method meant to remove negativity. Oh, and bassist Jenn Alva’s Elvis impression is pretty funny. Check it out and tell me it doesn’t make the weekend seem a bit closer.
