The annual Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) is taking place at venues across New York City this week. I still can’t believe the first conference happened a decade ago. I remember sitting in a ruby-lit room at Nell’s, an intimate venue on 14th Street, and listening to Aterciopelados play an acoutic set. It felt like I was in the band’s living room all the way in Bogotá, Colombia. Folks from all over the Spanish-speaking world crowded into the small space: they sat on the floor, huddled on couches and leaned against the walls. I knew it was the beginning of something big.
Fast forward to 2009 and LAMC is still going strong. I can’t wait to hear the airy melodies of Chilenos RH+; the rap stylings of Niña Dioz, who is being hailed as the most important hip-hop act in Mexico since Control Machete; the sultry boleros of Argentine Federico Aubele; and so much more. It’s like a musical journey across Latin America!
