Melancholy is more than a state of mind for Mexican indie rock darlings Hello Seahorse! It’s the inspiration for the trio’s new record, Bestia. Lead vocalist Lo Blondo recently told webzine Al Borde, “We had a lot to communicate and a lot of emotions compiled over the past few years, and we’re excited to finally put it all out there on one album.”
Those emotions are palpable in the first single, “Bestia,” an admission of guilt by someone too ashamed to actually say the words: No tengo voz para decirlo / por eso / vengo y te lo escribo / he deshonrado a mis principios. (I don’t have the voice to say / that’s why / I’ve come to write you / I dishonored my principles.) The song motivated Julieta Venegas and Toy Selectah to come up with their own remixes. And after listening to the original and newer cuts, I’m really digging Julieta’s version the most.
Another track that I have on replay is the heartfelt and melodic “Oso Polar,” about a polar bear looking for his home. According to the lyrics, he may seem defenseless at first, but his claws can kill you (probably as easily as Lo Blondo’s haunting voice will hypnotize you).
