Live from SXSW: Choc Quib Town at Sounds of Colombia

It's Day 3 of SXSW, and I am bizarrely happy to be sitting down at a computer right now—my feet are killing me. Remind me never to wear anything but sneakers to a music conference from now on! But enough about me being a weenie...let's talk about Colombians.

One of my favorite Latin hip-hop acts, Choc Quib Town (myspace.com/chocquibtown) is really making waves in Austin this week. On Wednesday night, the group headlined Sounds of Colombia, a showcase devoted entirely to the country's music and also featuring Bomba Estereo, Monareta and Poper (who share bandmates with Juanes). It seemed like every single colombiano attending SXSW was there, which made for an incredible vibe—one that female MC Goyo and her partner in crime, Tostao, further fueled by shouting out their home country every chance they could get.

Though hip-hop has a larger presence at SXSW this year than ever before, there's still a shicsm between international MCs and stateside artists. I happened to bring two friends/hip-hop superfans with me who had never heard of Choc Quib Town, and they couldn't believe how great the show was. Here's hoping I did my part to bridge the gap a bit!
