La Mala Rodriguez Preps New Album

Our favorite Spanish bad girl, La Mala Rodriguez, has been busy. After collaborating on Nelly Furtado’s Mi Plan with the song “Bajo otra Luz,” the sassy española put her head down and began working on her as-yet-untitled fourth album, which the 29-year-old calls her most “vanguard and elaborate” till now. Producers on board include Focus, who has also teamed up with Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez and Cristina Aguilera.

What can we expect? Anything. Earlier this year, La Mala told Spanish newspaper that she grew up listening to everyone from Ravel to Rocío Jurado and she wasn’t afraid of veering away from hip-hop. “My path is to live and be happy,” she said.

That’s all good but I hope she still remains as vocal about the societal ills she’s known for rapping about, issues like drugs and domestic violence. For example, in the song “Nanai” from the 2007 album Malamarismo, she rhymed Haceis muy pareja/ tú le pegas y ella se déjà (You make a good couple/you hit her and she lets him). I think we need more of that.
