I Have "Mucho" Love for Babasónicos

With so many rock en español bands out there, it can be hard to separate the good from the bad. After all, they pretty much share the same uniform—4-6 nerdy 30-somethings sporting flock of seagulls haircuts and the skinniest jeans known to man!—and that makes it tough for any one group to actually stand out from the pack.
Don't let that deter you from checking out Babasónicos, though. This Argentinean outfit has been in the game since the 1990s, and though they're just as influenced by New Wave as the next Latin American band, it's all in a very lush and sophisticated kind of way (Unlike other groups. Who shall remain nameless. Zoé.)
Last month, Babasónicos broke the enviable 1 million plays mark on MySpace thanks to their new material from Mucho+, a beefed up version of 2008's Mucho featuring all-new tracks. Mucho+ is out today, and my favorite new song on the record is "Formidable," which infectiously ambles along like the dreamiest of Nick Drake songs and would be the perfect soundtrack to any road trip scene in an indie movie. Seriously—can't you just picture Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna or Rodrigo Santoro driving on a dusty road, top down and all, with this track playing in the background? That's a pretty solid barometer for a song's greatness, if you ask me.
