The Great Appeal of Natalia Lafourcade

I’ve been playing Los Amigos Invisibles’ latest album, Commercial, a lot lately—especially when I want the weekend to get here quicker—and I keep coming back to “Vivire Para Ti,” a song about love and fidelity featuring Mexican pop princess Natalia Lafourcade. Sweet, airy and very catchy, it’s the kind of feel-good track you want to play as you drive along the ocean with the top down. Credit Lafourcade’s tender and enthralling voice for that warm and fuzzy feeling.

Thankfully, the 25-year-old isn’t just guesting on other people’s records. She recently released her third and latest album, Hu Hu Hu, a collection of songs “about love and falling out of love, about my experiences, about happiness, about sarcasm,” according to the singer-songwriter, whose whimsical lyrics are always fun to hear.

In “Ella es Bonita,” one of my favorite tracks on the album, she innocently asks, “por què sera?/cuando lo tienes ya no quieres/el mundo no entiende de amores ya/ estoy tan cansanda de esperar.” It’s about waiting for a guy who can’t seem to make up his mind between her and a pretty girl who is stringing him along. I love the video (and no, Lilly Allen isn’t the one singing!).
