Free Music Alert: Indie Label Nublu Records Spreads the Joy

forrointhedark.com

I love a good freebie. Manhattan–based indie label Nublu Records is giving away some of the best tunes emanating from its namesake East Village club. Why, you ask? Simply because it’s Christmas, that’s why. The Nublu Holiday Giveaway includes 20 Mp3s by acts with one thing in common: They all live and jam in New York City. My favorites hail from Brazil and experiment with homegrown sounds filtered through the Big Apple.

The compilation features “Saudade,” a soul-stirring bilingual duet between singer-songwriter Otto, a Pernambuco native considered one of the pioneers of the mangue beat movement (a fusion of traditional rhythms with rock, hip-hop and electronica), and Mexican songstress Julieta Venegas. Brazilian expats Forro in the Dark have two songs on the album, including the surf-rock-ish “Perro Loco,” a fun Spanish-language tune that makes it seem like August. And then there’s 3 Na Massa, a trio that add rhythm to women’s love stories, coupling them with the voices of female Brazilian singers, like CéU in the case of the song “Doce Guia.” Download all 20 tracks here.
