ChocQuibTown Represents for Colombia

Colombia never ceases to amaze me. I’ve been here for over a week—first in Medellín and now in Bogotá—and am inspired by all the people I keep meeting: Coal miners, professional cyclists, alternative politicians, film directors. All of them friendly and ready to invite foreigners to their house for a meal, conversation and the chance to show a different side of their beloved country.

It’s this same warmth that comes across in ChocQuibTown’s video for the song “De Donde Vengo Yo” from their upcoming as-yet untitled album (out March 2 on Nacional Records). The clip pays homage to Colombia’s Afro-Pacific coast, where the band first began to fuse hip-hop and folklore to tell listeners that this country is about more than just coffee and cocaine.

The new single is about how life can be tough but you have to make the most out of it. “Tenemos problemas pero andamos happy,” they sing. “We have problems but we’re happy.” I’ll drink a shot of aguardiente to that! Check it out:
