3 Questions for Sr. Flavio of Los Fabulosos Cadillacs

As you may or may not know, I've unabashedly hearted Los Fabulosos Cadillacs since the tender age of 12, when I first heard "Matador" thanks to my rock en español-savvy cousins in Costa Rica. I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Sr. Flavio, one of the legendary Argentine rock group's co-founders, about their first album in six years (the exquisite and just-released La Luz del Ritmo, which you can hear live when the band brings their Satanico Pop reunion tour to the States on April 3) plus how "Matador" changed their lives as much as it did mine. Take a look at what he had to say, plus an excerpt from their behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of the new album...
How did the decision to reunite as Los Fabulosos Cadillacs come about?
We had been talking about it for a long time, but when [bandmate Gerardo 'Toto' Rotblat] passed away, it became more serious. We want to take advantage of the time we have in this life to keep making music. I have been writing songs for other artists and playing with other bands in Argentina this whole time...but at the end of the day, we will always come back to Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. We plan to continue recording more music after this album and tour.
I'm sure that will make your legions of fans happy! Does it ever surprise you that you still have so many supporters after all these years?
Yes. It's crazy, but we really enjoy it. Especially in the States—the fact that we can come back after years to play three big shows is something to be proud of. And people are already singing along to the new music along with the old.
Why do you think your classic song, "Matador," became such a huge hit?
I don't pretend to know what makes a rock band or a song successful in the mainstream; I hardly listen to any mainstream artists myself. We're just fortunate to have had commercial success as Los Fabulosos. But I am definitely grateful for "Matador" because of what it did for our band. We can go anywhere in the world, and people will recognize us by that one song. How could we ever get tired of playing a song that changed our lives in such a big way?
