Our new little princess is due in less than a month and I'm completely unprepared! With Dessa I had lists upon lists of things I needed to purchase and do. I spent months researching the best baby gear so I could be ready for anything. Bottom line - I spent way too much time, energy and money on crap that is still sitting around my house unused and unopened.
I've learned my lesson about what newborns really need. If you're a first time mom in waiting, repeat after me - less is more, less is more. I got totally caught up in the new baby fog last time and just wanted every gadget and trinket for our little girl. This time around I'm only getting the things I really couldn't live without the first time around, which coincidentally are the things I didn't get enough of with Dessa. Here's a peak at what I'll be shopping for soon:
-The best swaddling blankets in the world.
Zoo Animals Muslin Wraps 4-pack pad, $44.00.
-The warmest, softest, cuddliest blankets ever. I hate to be cheesy but it really feels like you're laying your baby to sleep on a cloud. Baby star blankets, $66.00.
-The only diaper balm I'll ever use. It's all Dessa's butt has ever known and she's never had a diaper rash. Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm. 2 oz. jar, $14.95.
-Best way we found to bathe baby without getting one of those giant baby tubs that leaks everywhere. Summer Infant Large Comfort Bather, $22.99
-A well stocked medicine cabinet is something we totally overlooked the first time around but it's essential so you don't have to go scrambling to look for a 24 hour CVS in the middle of the night. The First Years American Red Cross Deluxe Healthcare & Grooming Kit, $19.99.
-Carter's onesies are my favorite! I had so many dressy outfits for Dessa and she barely wore them. She spent almost all her days in onesies and swaddled in a blanket. Carter's 5 Pack Bodysuits, $14.99.
-I loved my Boppy pillow so much I ended up getting one for the car so I could nurse on the go. Boppy Bare Naked with Slipcover, $34.99.
You'll notice there aren't any toys on this list. We have two or three rattles from when Dessa was an infant that we'll use again this time plus some stuffed animals and mobiles we'll play with—but nothing too over the top. In the first few weeks, they just want to be loved which means all you really need to do is keep them warm, keep them fed, keep them rested and keep them close.
Do you have any essential newborn items you couldn't live without?
