Did you know March 8th is International Women's Day? It's celebrated globally and draws attention to the "economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future." I'm not one to jump in on contructed holiday celebrations but being a mami and on top of that a mami to two baby girls on the road to womanhood, this is a day close to my heart.
I've decided to celebrate the day with my girls by reading them books about inspiring Latinas and sharing photos of women in our family with them to teach them where they came from. And what's a day celebrating women without talking about motherhood? So without a doubt we'll talk about how they each made their grand entrance into this world. This simple celebration is one, I hope, will become a tradition for us. Maybe one day they'll even celebrate this underrated holiday with their own baby girls.
If you want to celebrate International Women's Day and motherhood, check out The White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood whose efforts focus on making "pregnancy and childbirth...safe for all women and newborns in every country around the world." The White Ribbon Alliance is asking people to wear white (watch out, Diddy) and host a Global Dinner Party during the month of March to celebrate mothers and women who are making a difference for the state of maternal care.
If you ever needed an excuse to throw a little fiesta, this is it!
