Since I'm going to be giving you advice on All Things Personal, I figured it's only fair to share my own brand of Personal with you. Today, I'll illustrate with an interview...with myself.
Ready? Let’s pretend I’m famous and you give a damn about the craziness that is my life. You are at the grocery store and reaching for the latest trashy tabloid for a chance to play the Mystery Celeb Fat-Match game because you needed an ego boost.

I've never told this story before.
Considering what I usually share, that's saying a lot. But suicide attempts, successful or not, are not exactly the way to break the ice when there's nothing else to talk about. Unless, of course, you happen to be a celebrity by birth who lost her father and survived trying to slit her wrists.

The year I graduated high school was the year I saw myself in glossy images and Spanglish words. The images weren't me and the words were not my own, but Latina arrived on my doorstep in 1996, giving me permission to celebrate the hyphen. You know, the one between Mexican and American.
It was in the much-beloved Dolores Dice column that I found myself reflected in the questions featured. And in Dolores' wise and sassy Spanglish straight-talk responses, I found my favorite kind of validation: the kind that comes with the playful sarcasm and tough love.
