I've come to the conclusion that my new boyfriend's mother hates me. He's invited me over for dinner on multiple occasions, and each time she has served me a meal made with nuts, to which I'm deathly allergic. She knows about my allergy—my boyfriend has reminded her time and again. On Thanksgiving, she once again extended an invitation to her home and my boyfriend practically begged me to come. I agreed, even stopping at the florist for a hostess gift.

I am a white and Puerto Rican woman living in southern Texas. Depending on how I dress, or do my make up or hair, I can appear to be either heritage. The problem? I am afraid, almost ashamed, to show my Latina side. I used to be so proud, letting everyone know that I was both white and Latina. But now I'm scared to identify with my Puerto Rican side because of negative attention.

I met a guy while out for my birthday with friends. Before the night was over, we’d made out, he’d asked me what I wanted for my birthday and asked me back to his place (I let him know that’s not my style). After texting each other for a week, I reminded him about his birthday offer and asked him to join me for a movie date.

I'm 18 and my best friend is a guy. We met through Facebook and got to know each other by talking every day for two months before he asked me out. We then met in person but by then he had a girlfriend. Now he and I go to parties every weekend; we've kissed and talked about how our lives would be different if we were dating. When we had sex, I knew I loved him. The problem is I am not ready to walk away from my current relationship. Que hago?

My daughter has been the antithesis of sugar, spice, and everything nice lately. We've had plenty of feet stomping, fist shaking when she doesn't get her way (which, incidentally, is often.)
I'll be honest...m'ija impresses me just as much as she frustrates me when she tries to run the show. I am, after all, hoping to raise a chingona. Let me repeat that: I want to raise a chingona.

As a bulimic teenager, I learned to stop throwing up in the shower. The running water masked the sound of my purging but sometimes I wasn't diligent enough in my clean-up. My parents whispered; I heard them, so I just stopped. No one ever brought it up.

Who's your #LatinoHero? I've asked the question of Dimelo readers and am thrilled to see responses sharing your stories about those who have inspired you.
The past few weeks have been an eye-opening time for this Hispanic Heritage Month Virgin. I want to take the time to mention a few more of my own Latino Heroes before sharing yours.

If I had a dime for every time a Dimelo reader asked me how to "feel" more Latina (or how to come to terms with celebrating our own definition of cultural identity), I'd have a lot of dimes. The questions may be worded differently to reflect personal experience, but the common denominator is the same: a feeling of disconnect between our dual identities as hyphenated Americans.
