What I am questioning is why words like "beaners" and mean-spirited questions fill my tweet stream whenever Latinos, American born or not, happen to decide to show some star-spangled spirit and why this sentiment is celebrated and shared by so many.
I've thought about it for a while now and I don't like the answer I keep coming back to: racism is alive and well, and close-minded people piss me off.
Funny story: According to the Internet and a little thing called fact-checking, Marc Anthony is American. It comes with his being born in New York. But I guess it was easier to tweet asking if Marc actually was qualified to sing something like God Bless America instead of, yaknow, googling the question first and maybe not looking like a biggoted, small-minded asshat by just throwing it all out there instead. Or maybe the Internet was mostly broken that day and only Twitter worked?
