Dimelo: Being Patriotic (With a Tan)

Mad because I don't know the Mexican national anthem; I was born in Detroit. And I'm now being told that I'm not American enough to sing allegiance to my country. I don't even know the words to De Colores (a traditional children’s folk song I have always associated with birthdays) and made it through my childhood moving my lips and humming along.

I do know the words to "God Bless America" still and could bring it home in a shower-rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner," as long as I knew no one else was listening. This is one of those times where I'm more American than Mexican and remind people that I am American by birth and both Mexican and American by culture. But that isn't even the point.

Because really? I don't remember anybody bitching when Celine Dion from Canada sang "God Bless America" on the USS Harry S. Truman during a televised performance in October of 2007. Go ahead. Google it.

She has a lovely accent, doesn't she? (That's the part where I'm amused. Can you tell?)
