The Best Reader Mail I've Ever Received

A reader recently sent me a note that literally brought tears to my eyes, and I knew I had to share it with all of you. I'd love to hear your thoughts after you've read these beautiful words:
Querida Mimi,
I have been impressed by you and what you have done with Latina since
your very first issue as editor. But today I adore you and love what
you have done on the cover of Latina. It took my breath away. I
immediately carried it on the [train] with me, and I'll even admit held it
vertically so the young dark-skinned Latinos sitting across from me
just might see it and held it cover side out as I walked the streets
of Boston. To me, it represents the transformation you have led at
Latina, and I am so grateful for your leadership. Yes, over the years
there have been a few darker-skinned Latinas, but I do not remember
seeing a cover model like Sessilee [Lopez] and I have been waiting!
I have been a reader of Latina magazine from the beginning. It was
the basis of my projects in journalism school. It was part of my
questioning in art school as I explored what it meant to "look"
Latina through photographs and many conversations to questioning
classmates. I have seen it go through so many changes. A few years
ago, a Latina filmmaker and I lamented that Latina had become so
"bubble gum" and had lost the depth that we so wanted and needed. I
truly believe you have brought that depth back in the sophistication
of the design, the respect for your readers shown in the subjects and
lengths of the articles (Yes, we will read it even if it is more than
a few short paragraphs!), and the genuine admiration for the talents
and uniqueness of the women (and men) you portray.
Thank you for allowing the magazine to explore the depth and
complexities of all of our beautiful and talented Latina women. I
have talked to many of my Latina high school students about not
needing to need to fall into the "virgin/whore" mold that [Entertainment Editor] Angie
Romero spoke of in "Unbreakable." Thank you again for steering the
magazine away from the superficial and honoring who we really are.
And thank you to your incredible staff who so elegantly tell so many
women's stories and in doing so inspire countless more.
Con Respeto Siempre,
Mónika
