Dramatic Floor Mirrors

I love the look of a tall, floor mirror leaning up against a wall.  It’s beautiful in a dining room, living room, foyer, honestly anywhere in your home because it makes a bold statement in any setting.  But if you’ve priced them, they can easily costs upwards of $300. I decided to make one from scratch, which I featured on my Spanish-language home makeover program, Decorando Contigo, so, of course, I wanted to share with you how simple it is to do!

I started by buying 12”x12” mirror tiles that come in a packet of six for only $20.  You can purchase these at Home Depot or Target and you can find them with a smooth or beveled edge—personally I like the beveled edge.  I bought two packets for a total of 12 mirrored tiles.

At my local home improvement store, I had them cut a 4’ x 8’ MDF board down to 34” wide by 82” long, which I used as a backing to glue my mirror tiles on top using Liquid Nails.  Six rows of two tiles centered on the board.  Now, if you’re following the math, that leaves 5” all the way around that allowed me to use 5” baseboard trim to create a frame that attaches simply with finish or brad nails.  Miter the ends with a mitering kit for a professional look without the need for electric tools—just some elbow grease.

And there you go! You have a custom-made floor mirror at a fraction of the cost! I painted the frame a satin black for greater contrast against the existing furniture and placed one floor mirror behind each of the nightstands in a master bedroom. Talk about “wow factor” when you walk into the bedroom! Super chic and I love the way it reflects a double image of the table lamp giving the room more depth.

Keep in mind mirrors are a great way to visually open up a small space, too. And, a floor mirror like this has so much presence in a room, there is no need for additional art to fill up the walls.
