The Great Progression

There’s no doubt that Latinos are a presence that can no longer be ignored in America. Some would even say we’re poised for domination. And with the Census Bureau declaring there are currently almost 47 million Latinos in this country, I can’t help but agree. Afro-Cuban correspondent Soledad O’Brien is even putting the finishing touches on an important CNN documentary entitled Latino in America, which will air in October.

As we wait for that, take a look at Geraldo Rivera’s The Great Progression ($24.95). Out now from Celebra, the book features interviews with prominent Latinos including Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, and Jennifer Lopez, and discusses the evolving role our community has in all aspects of American culture—from entertainment to politics. The Peabody and Emmy Award-winning journalist makes an argument for the celebration of our culture’s impact. And despite the constant news of hate crimes and other events that make it clear that some don’t want us in this country, there is reason to be optimistic about the future. As Geraldo says, it is time “to recognize that our nation stands on the frontier of monumental changes that will leave the United States unalterably changed, yet still the same— a beacon of liberty, enterprise, and opportunity for the world. We are truly all in this together.”

Amen!
