Now that Salma Hayek is starring in the film adaptation of Noticia de un Secuestro, it’s time to revisit the Nobel prizewinner’s work, originally published in 1996. Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s first and only non-fiction book tells the story of the kidnapping of (among others) Colombian journalist Maruja Pachon and her sister-in-law by members of the Medellin Cartel, and her husband Alberto Villamizar's passionate negotiations to set her free.

It’s a good thing Marquez isn’t planning on quiting writing anytime soon, either. “I do nothing else but write,” he told a Colombian newspaper in response to those silly retirement rumors that were swirling around recently. Lucky for us!
