Flash Back Fridays: Como La Flor

If you haven’t already watched Selena this week in honor of our girl, then take some time this weekend to watch it yet again, for the 100th time if you’re like me, and preferably the 10th anniversary two-disc edition DVD, which was released back in 2007 and includes extras such as behind-the-scenes footage, interviews with J.Lo, and screen tests. I think everyone (Constance Marie, Edward James Olmos, Jon Seda) is brillz in Gregory Nava’s quintessential biopic, but none more so than La Lopez, who really, really wanted to get this one right. And boy, did she ever—from Selena’s beautiful smile, to her on-stage charisma, to her longing for independence, to her sense of loyalty toward her familia. In fact, my fave scenes are the ones Selena shares with her family: Constance Marie teaching a young Selena how to dance cumbia; Selena putting her head in Edward James Olmos’ chest after she ran off and married Chris.
And yet, no matter how many times I watch this flick, I always hope it can end differently.
