When it comes to sales, there’s still one (not to mention, indie) label doing their damn thing. And they’ve been doing it for quite some time. Twenty-five years, in fact.
Fonovisa, which was recently acquired by Universal Music Latin Entertainment, is going all out in 2009, starting with the release of La Historia de los Exitos, a double-CD set that’s exactly what it sounds like. Except you wouldn’t expect to hear Cristian Castro or Enrique Iglesias alongside Los Tigres del Norte and La Diva de la Banda aka Jenni Rivera on there, now would you? Their illustrious pop careers started at the papi of regional Mexican music, too, as it turns out. In addition to releasing greatest hits compilations and re-issues throughout the year, the label will also dedicate each month to a single act, starting with Los Temerarios in February. Best of all, there will be a massive concert, reportedly in the fall, featuring the label’s current marquee players. Something tells me Vegas sounds proper…but you didn’t hear it from me.
