Family Power

Of all the people competing in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, one name stuck: Lopez, specifically U.S.A National Team Members in Taekwondo Jean, Steven, Mark and Diana.

The children of Julio and Ondina, who immigrated from Nicaragua to New York City in 1972, the Lopez siblings made history by becoming the first American family to compete on the same Olympic team (their fourth sibling, Jean, was their coach, and led Mark to a silver medal and Diana and Steven to a bronze medal). In their brand new memoir Family Power: The True Story of How “The First Family of Taekwondo” Made Olympic History (out today from Celebra), the Lopez siblings talk about how their shared love of the sport and their unbreakable familial bond helped realize their dreams of Olympic victory. And to think that, like most great success stories, it all started in a tiny garage.

Watch out, London: I suspect the 2012 Games will be that much more exciting thanks to this extraordinary family!
