So...I pulled up a video of Miley at the VMAs and watched. Was she crude? Hell yes. Did she overshadow her natural talent by oversexualizing her performance to the point of being obnoxious? Certainly. Am I the only one wondering what the hell the teddy bear leotard and giant dancing plushies had to to with anything? Maybe. Blogger Kim Bongiorno of Let Me Start By Saying wrote an open letter to Miley highlighting these very points.
And yet, here I am...defending Miley, just as I defended Selena Gomez when the internet went crazy as headlines declared the fellow former Disney actress planned to go nude. As with Selena, I firmly believe that Miley is stuck in the quagmire of reinventing herself as she works, quite successfully, to distance herself from the squeaky clean pop icon that is Hannah Montana. Hollywood and the rest of the entertainment industry have created the very situation now being criticized in media headlines and twitter updates by convincing us that "former child star" and "growing up" are synonymous with more skin and less modesty. We're all pissy about it because we're not just wondering what 20-year-old Miley is doing with that foam finger in her crotch again -- we're wondering what the girl she used to be is doing with that foam finger in her crotch again.
