Dear Dolores,

My boyfriend is shorter than I am, but we love each other very much. My best friend says that I should break up with him because we look bad together. I have two questions for you: One, how can I tell her that I want to make my own decisions without being rude? Two, should I break up with him?

Your best "friend" seems to be a superficial person who judges others by their looks. She doesn’t understand the meaning of true love and fails to appreciate your great sacrifice in giving up six-inch tacones for the rest of your life. Remind her that stature has nothing to do with performance. After all, those chaparritos built pyramids that almost touched the sun. As my 4-foot-1 abuelita, who raised eight 6-foot-tall children, used to say, “El major perfume viene en botella chiquita.”
