Dear Dolores:

I'm seeing a guy I really like. He's cute, nice and respectable, except that five months ago he finished a two-year jail sentence for breaking and entering. I'm a good girl who's going to college and I want to make something of my life, not like the other mujeres I see around me. He tells me that he needs someone like me to keep him out of trouble. Do you think it's a mistake to start a serious relationship with him?

Because so many testosterone driven men make stupid mistakes in their youth, I'm inclined to give those who have paid their debt to society the benefit of the doubt. If nothing else, this helps replenish the ever shrinking pool of available men. What concerns me, however, is his expectancy that it is your job to keep him on the straight and narrow. Can you see yourself being this man's parole officer for the rest of your life? As a college student, you will find new horizons opening up for you with every semester that goes by. Give yourself a chance to explore—unencumbered.
