Dear Dolores,

I don’t think Latinos should be grouped with whites in forms and questionnaires. It’s like saying the color green is gray. I can always tell someone’s white or Latino. What do you think?

Dear Melodia,

I think you are wrong. Latino is not a race. (¡Ay Dios mío! If I had one peso for every time I have answered this question over the last ten years I could fly to Los Cabos and ignore the ignoramuses). There are white Latinos, black Latinos, and every-shade-of-brown Latinos. So, please share your secret: How can you tell who is (or isn't) Latino just by looking at them?

—Gracias, D
