Why do people use their spouses as an excuse to start an affair?

Dear La Hon,

Because saying "The Devil made me do it" isn't as convincing? They use their spouses because they know that the best way to overcome someone’s moral reservations about having an affair with a married person is to cry wolf over cocktails and tell the cute coworker that your wife/husband is an impotent ogre/frigid witch who puts poop in your soup and makes you slurp it while watching endless hours of football, and that the only reason you haven’t left him/her is the little children or because he/she is dying of cancer, etc, etc, etc.
