Dear Dolores:

I am so confused. I asked my male friend whether he could ever see me as more than just a friend. His response was, and I quote, “I know that when stuff starts going bad in my life, I am definitely going to need you. So don’t take my answer as an ‘ I don’t like you.’ Take it as a ‘Please ask again later’ because I know any decision I would make now is not going to be the right one”. I don’t know what he means by that. Please help me!

Dear Raquel:

Ay… you have to admit the man has a way with words. And I can feel his pain. It seems to me that right now he needs you more as a friend than as a lover, and he’s afraid of losing you by giving a straight answer. Although he’s leaving the door ajar, you shouldn’t be the one to ask again, as he requested. If there’s a time when he might see you as “more than just a friend,” it should be up to him to let you know. But don’t sit around waiting for that to happen. Go on with your own life.
