If you’re noticing your forehead sporting a few more blemishes than usual this winter, consider this: When the weather gets cold, you turn to mittens, scarves and hats to keep warm, right? Well, if you have bangs and you jam a hat down over your head, your bangs get pressed onto your forehead. Now think of the fact that you could be sweating a little around your hairline under that hat. Now you’ve got the oils from your hair, mingling with sweat, pressed against your skin. Bingo, blemishes!

People, I tell you this story with a warning: Do what I say, not what I did. Over the weekend I found myself in my brand new bathroom staring into the mirror at my skin. It looked dry and riddled with clogged pores. So I did what we’re all tempted to do, but shouldn’t: I began the process of extraction on my own skin. But instead of wrapping clean fingertips in cotton and gently squeezing ripe areas, I used my nails and dug into my skin until my chin was utterly inflamed. I know. I feel like my beauty editor license should be suspended.

All week our beauty team will be coming at you with trend predictions for 2010 to help keep you readers looking gorgeous in the new decade! First up, nails: It appears to be out with the obviously subversive. Black nail polish, which this past year gave way to the prevalence of deep green and dark navy variations, will be shelved this spring in exchange for soft blue-gray shades. It’s not exactly a return to predicable Easter-egg pastels, but rather a refreshing antidote to precious pink.

A word to the wise and beautiful this winter season: As the weather gets colder, try to resist the temptation to crank up that thermostat and bath in boiling water. Cold temperatures dry out your skin, leaving it dehydrated, raw and itchy. And the artificial heat blasting in your home only worsens the situation. The same can be said for hot water; it just dries out your skin even more. So keep the temperatures moderate and your skin super hydrated and have a healthy and gorgeous new year!

I was eager to try the new Lancôme Oscillation PowerFoundation ($48, lancome-usa.com) as soon as I heard about it. It’s a mineral powder foundation with a sponge applicator that actually pulsates when you press the button on the handle. These vibrations (that’s 7,000 micro-vibrations per minute to be exact) are meant to help the mineral formula blend onto skin better.

Microdermabrasion is a service you can get at a spa or a dermatologist’s office that uses small crystals to help slough off dead skin cells and reveal smoother, clearer skin. In recent years, there have been several kits and products available to do this type of treatment at home. I’ve been testing the truly unique Blinc Resurf.a.stic Body ($60, blincinc.com). It’s a bit pricey, but a lot cheaper than the professional service.
