The Latin Music Massage: A New Spa Craze?

If you’re looking for a way to spice up a massage, I’ve got just the thing. It’s called the Rhythm Massage, and it’s based on flamenco, salsa, and bolero music.

Dayalis Gonzalez, a massage therapist at the Ritz-Carlton South Beach, got the idea for the service as she was dancing to Latin music in the car and realized that a massage could play off the beats of her favorite music.

After studying the songs and matching different techniques to each one, she created two massages. There’s the energizing one—“it’s like drinking a cup of Cuban coffee,” she says—and the relaxing version.

The energizing massage features fast flamenco and salsa. As the guitarist heats up, so does she, quickly making percussion-like movements on your back and legs. “I pretend I’m playing the tambores,” says Dayalis.

But if your idea of a nice spa treatment is something that makes you completely zone out, go for the relaxing massage; Dayalis matches her long, sweeping strokes to the slower pace of bolero.  “Both treatments celebrate the culture in Miami,” says Dayalis. But there’s no reason you have to be there to do that—I say, turn on your favorite Latin music and tell your guy to massage to the beat. Then, switch places.
