Is Pubic Hair Making A Comeback?

Chicas, bush is back.

For years the Brazilian wax was the epitome of down-under beauty for women. We shaved. We waxed. We even underwent laser treatments to give ourselves a clean, soft, and smooth pubic area.

Regardless of whether or not we personally prefer our lady parts clean shaven or fully grown-out, I think we can all agree that we don’t like being told what’s beautiful and acceptable and what isn’t. Besides that, does anyone actually want to be getting Brazilian waxes twenty years from now? Well, ladies, breath a sigh of relief because it seems that times are finally a-changing. For all those women out there who are too lazy, too rushed, too frightened of pain...or who just don’t give a crap, bush is back and better than ever:

1. Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz:

Cameron Diaz is the unofficial ambassador for pubic hair. After publicly admitting that she rocks a full bush, she also questioned why so many young women are succumbing to what she calls a “fad.” In her new self-help book The Body Book, Diaz came out strongly against the practice of shaving and waxing, and became a champion for women everywhere who prefer to keep it natural. She writes, “I know you may think you’ll be wearing the same style of shoes forever and the same style of jeans forever, but you won’t. The idea that vaginas are preferable in a hairless state is a pretty recent phenomenon and all fads change, people.” Thanks, Cameron, for breaking the ice on such an important beauty topic.

2. The Mindy Project

The Mindy Project:

We all love Mindy Kaling. And this season, Mindy proved she’s our girl crush for a good reason, when her character on The Mindy Project encounters an all-too-real problem: men's opinions about your grooming habits down under. When Danny, her overly blunt and honest co-worker, accidentally sees her completely naked, he offers up a piece of advice no one is expecting. “Just grow it out,” he says about her pubic hair. “No one wants a 9-year-old.”

Plenty of women have spoken out against clean-shaved pubes for years, but you rarely hear the male perspective on television. We appreciated that Mindy basically said it’s okay not to shave. In fact, plenty of men actually enjoy it, too.

3. American Apparel

American Apparel:

American Apparel made headlines when mannequins at a Lower Manhattan store were spotted donning transparent lingerie and flashing their fully grown out pubic hair. While the act is believed to be a publicity stunt by a company known for embracing the “shock” factor, many people came out in support of American Apparel and lauded the company for promoting pubic hair acceptance.

4. Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow:

It turns out that prim ‘n proper Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t afraid to discuss her grooming habits. On an episode of The Ellen Show last spring, she openly admitted that she rocks a “70s vibe” down under. Although she played coy about whether or not she’s bringing back the “big bush,” her dialogue on the subject makes it clear that women no longer feel like they have to wax and shave their pubes, and rocking the “full bush” is nothing to be ashamed of.

5. Everyday women

Everyday women:

Ok, so Cameron Diaz and Gwyneth Paltrow can talk all day long about the return of the pubes, but what about you and me and all our friends who aren’t celebrities and don’t sleep with guys like Justin Timberlake and Chris Martin?

Well, it turns out, that it’s not just celebrities who are foregoing the razor burn. According to recent studies, more and more women are returning to their au naturale state. In fact, 51% of women do not “style or groom their pubic hair.” Forty-five percent of the women in the study admitted that they’ve stopped shaving or waxing because they “no longer be bothered to keep up the grooming”, and another 62% answered that their partner “prefers the natural look.”
