There's an art to wearing red lipstick. Once you master it, there's nothing more glamorous or dramatic than a perfectly done red lip.
First, make sure your lip area is prepped, by using concealer and/or foundation in the area around your lips to smooth out your skin tone. Then, carefully line your lips with a sharp liner in a neutral tone that matches your natural lip color. Now you're set to fill in the lips with the lipstick of your choice.
Here are some color recommendations:
For chocolate skin tones, we recommend Diva by Mac. It's a matte color that lasts all day ($14, maccosmetics.com).
For tan to caramel skin tones, try L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche in British Red ($9, drugstore.com). Lots of Latinas are raving about this affordable and flattering lipstick.
For those with yellowish vanilla complexions, check out the original Viva Glam by Mac. It was introduced in 1994, and proceeds continue to go to HIV/AIDS charities ($14, maccosmetics.com).
For very pale complexions, check out Chanel's Rouge Allure Luminous Satin Lip Colour in Lover, which has a pinkish undertone that brightens up the face ($30, uma.chanel.com).
To make the lips pop, you can coat them with a layer of clear lipgloss for evening. Or simply blot out the color for a more understated, wearable matte look for day. Who knew red could be so versatile?
