Selena Gomez tries hair extensions! Snooki ditched the pouf to show off new bangs!
Stars love to try new looks for the MTV Video Music Awards—but some experiments work out a lot better than others. Here's how to copy our three favorite brave new looks of the night.
1. VMA: Selena Gomez
Get Selena Gomez's Long Ponytail
Selena had shoulder-length hair only a few weeks ago, which means that this waist-skimming ponytail must be an extension! It's easier than you might think to try this look yourself. All you need is a ponytail hair extension that matches your hair color (the Hairdo 18" Pony Tail, $44, qvc.com, comes in nine different shades).
Make a side part and pull your hair into a low side ponytail with your fingers. Secure with an elastic band. Now just slide the comb attached to the extension into the top of the ponytail, right behind the elastic band. Then wrap a 1-inch section of hair around the hair tie and hold it in place with a bobby pin.
2. Victoria: VMA's
Get Victoria Justice's Pink Smoky Eye
Makeup artists often suggest staying away from pink eye shadow because it can make you look sick and bring out the red in your eyes. But the latest bright pink shadows prove that theory all wrong—especially when they're paired with white and black eyeliners, which is what Victoria did.
Line the inner corners of your eyes with a white eyeliner, then line the outer corners of your eyes with a black eyeliner. The white brightens while the black defines. For a more dramatic, smoky effect, smudge the black liner with a small shadow brush. Now pat a pink cream eye shadow (like the pink in the Shiseido Luminizing Satin Eye Color Trio in Boudoir, $33, nordstrom.com) on your lids, then apply a few coats of black mascara.
3. Rosario: VMA's
Get Rosario Dawson's Bold Red Mouth
A red mouth can get a bit messy (because it's so intense, it's obvious when it smudges or gets on your teeth). But Rosario pulls it off beautifully.
To stop color from slipping outside the lines, draw a clear, waxy lip liner (like Too Faced Borderline, $18.50, sephora.com) around the outside edge of your lips, then apply a coat of red lipstick (try Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense in Satin Raspberry Red, $19, sephora.com), blot, and apply a second coat. And to ensure that lipstick won't end up on your teeth, stick your finger in your mouth, wrap your lips around it, then pull your finger out—it'll wipe off any pigment that's on the inside of your lips.
