Francia Raisa Avoids the Chola Look

Looking gorgeous doesn’t have to mean spending a lot of money. Just ask Francia Raisa, whose favorite products come from moderately priced cosmetic lines she can find at the drugstore.

"I really like Neutrogena for skin care and CoverGirl makeup," says the Secret Life of the American Teenager star.  "I can’t stand heavy makeup. I feel like my skin can’t breathe, and CoverGirl is really light."

While she favors MAC eye shadow and occasionally splurges on Chanel mascara, CoverGirl is her go-to brand for that too, and she's also a big fan of Lancôme's Juicy Tubes lip gloss and Miracle fragrance. "I've used Miracle since I got it as a gift when I was 14. I wore it to school and got a lot of attention from all the boys.  I’ve been spraying it ever since," she says.

Every night, Raisa puts ice cubes on her face to close pores, following up with Neutrogena moisturizer. Her weekly regimens include a visit to the tanning bed and the nail salon. "Even though I’m Hispanic, I’m so white," confides the daughter of a Mexican mother and Honduran father, Maximo Renan Almendarez Coello, aka Los Angeles radio star El Cucuy. Her manicures involve acrylic nail treatments and "a light pink polish with glitter on it."

Spa visits are another welcome beauty treat. In fact, on the morning we spoke, she was looking forward to a long-planned spa date with some of her cast mates later that day. "We're going back to work soon and we need to relax," explained Raisa, who’ll start shooting Secret Life’s third season later this month.

Raisa, who gets hair extensions for extra fullness and body, uses Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioner, a Chi flat iron and Chi Silk Infusion leave-in treatment.  She wears her hair down most of the time, but had it up in a bun “with volume at the top” at the 2009 ALMA Awards, where she wore a blue lace Jean Ferris gown and subtle blue eye makeup to match. “I loved how I looked,” she remembers.  The Teen Choice Awards? Not so much, due to overdoing it on the bronzer.  "I looked at the pictures and I looked terrible," she shudders.

Another beauty blunder was experimenting with the chola look. "I put lipliner on and no lipstick. Not a good look at all. I really like my lips, but with full lips you have to be careful,” notes Raisa, who always has lip gloss in her red carpet clutch, along with eyeliner, loose powder for shiny moments, and an eyebrow brush. "I'm obsessed with my eyebrows," she confesses.

Raisa, who’ll star next month in the ABC Family movie Cutting Edge: Fire & Ice, leaves us with one more beauty tip for taking your look from day to night. "When you want to go out and spice it up a bit," she suggests, "put a darker color shadow in the crease of your lid, and you're done."
