Although we’ve been watching Afro-Latina supermodel Joan Smalls walk the runways all week during New York Fashion Week, we’re still most transfixed with her look for the Carolina Herrera show.

Her hair was left down and long, held back with a thin black elastic headband. The trick, hairstylist Orlando Pita explained, is to put the headband around your neck before you tease all the hair, and then pull it up and place it just behind your ears and about two-inches past your hairline.

Joan’s makeup was only to “enhance her natural beauty,” says MAC makeup artist Diane Kendal.

Here’s how Diane created the look:

1. Before applying foundation, hydrate the skin (with both Prep + Prime Skin Smoother and Mineralize Charged Water Moisture Gel) to make it fresh and luminous.

2. Blend a dark powder bronzer (Diane used Pro Sculpt Sculpting Powder Pro Palette) under your cheekbones to define them. Then dust Tenderling Sheertone Blush over cheeks.

3. Add a neutral cream shadow along lids, and groom brows, but skip heavy liner or mascara.

4. Color in lips with a Lip Pencil in Spice (which—we promise—looks amazing on everyone) then finish with a clear lip balm.
