5 Best Beauty Trends from the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards

Last night, our stars showed off a bunch of exciting new beauty trends at the MTV Video Music Awards. From high-impact glitter to major curls, here are the five looks worthy of their own Moonman statuettes!

1. VMAs: Beauty: Soft Lips

Soft Lips

Forget the bold reds we’ve been seeing for ages: subtle nudes and girlie pinks were the shades stars like Selena GomezZoe Saldana, and Demi Lovato chose. Selena looks especially fresh and kissable. Her makeup artist, Karan Mitchell, layered Lancome Color Design Lipstick in Fashion Icon, $22, with Color Fever Gloss in Hibis-Kiss, $26, lancome-usa.com to get the rosy, high-shine finish.

2. VMAs: Beauty: Glitter Nails

Glitter Nails

Demi Lovato achieved the glitzy trifecta last night, showing off a dress covered in crystals, a huge diamond cocktail ring, and glitter-coated tips. The light-reflecting combo is a killer attention-getter. To get the look, try Deborah Lippmann Today Was a Fairytale, $20, lippmanncollection.com

3. VMAs: Beauty: Gold Lids

Gold Lids

Almost all our celebs opted for a gold or bronze eye, and Victoria Justice’s is especially gorgeous. The shimmery gold contrasts with jet-black eyeliner, which thickens as it meets the outer corners of her eyes. Smooth on Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color in Techno Gold, $25, shiseido.com, before dashing on black liner.

4. VMAs: Beauty: Classic Updo

Classic Updo

You simply can’t go wrong with an effortless updo. It always gives you instant glamour. To replicate Zoe Saldana’s, tease the hair at the crown of your head, twist once, and pin it. Then pull back the sides of your hair, securing with pins and allowing your layers to fall loosely by your face.

5. VMAs: Beauty: Big Curls

Big Curls

As we’ve joyously reported, curls are back in a big way! Demi’s are a glam take on the trend. Apply a dollop of mousse (like Got 2 B Fat-Tastic Thickening Plumping Mousse, $5.99, drugstore.com) to damp hair, then blow dry with a round brush to get mega-lift. Now curl each 1-inch section of hair  with a 1-inch curling iron. For the most flattering look, be sure to rotate the barrel away from your face.
