Do you love the hairstyles on So You Think You Can Dance? They’re the work of Latino stylist Jorge Serrano, who we recently caught up with to ask for his top behind-the-scenes secrets! Here’s what he shared:
1. Blast Away Frizz
After I finish a blowout, I always press the cool button on the blow dryer and give strands a shot of the cold air. The temp closes the cuticles in your hair, which locks in shine, holds your style for longer, and—most importantly—keeps it from frizzing!
2. Cocktail Your Products
Backstage, I mix Shu Uemura Cotton Uzu (a creamy wax), $38, shuuemura.com, with Shu Uemura Essence Absolue (a moisturizing oil), $68, shuuemura.com, to get the perfect level of hold, hydration, and high shine.
3. Go With the Flow
Because the dancers are moving so much and the set is so hot, I don’t create styles that are too perfect or overly “done.” I like hairstyles that have movement and flexibility! The same is true for you: if you’re outside in the heat, running around all day, go for an easy, loose style, not something that requires a ton of product.
4. Add Extra Volume
To prevent my styles from falling flat, I spray on a finishing hairspray, like Shu Uemura Sheer Lacquer, $38, shuuemura.com.
