One of our favorite Instagram style stars, 4-year-old Dominicana Haileigh, not only has an awesome fashion sense, but her hair adds to her signature look. “She has a LOT of hair,” her mom Zulay told us. “Sometimes, it takes me awhile to get it to cooperate.” Avoid the headaches and try these tips (inspired by Haileigh’s looks) with the help of Mixed Chicks stylists!
After using Mixed Chicks shampoo and conditioner, apply Mixed Chicks Leave In from the roots to the ends of the hair. Depending on hair density, it may be necessary to section or even subsection the hair to ensure that the product is evenly distributed. Allow the hair to air dry or use a diffuser attachment at the end of your blow dryer. Once the hair is pretty much dry (damp is ok), it is safe to begin to fluff and separate the hair. Hair tip: Sleeping on a satin pillowcase will protect your locks from frizz!
Begin with freshly cleansed shampooed and conditioned hair. Prior to blow-drying, apply Mixed Chicks Straightening Serum from roots to the ends of the hair. (Because the Straightening Serum contains hydrolyzed wheat protein, it acts as a thermal protectant and will prevent dropping and loss of elasticity in the curls. For this reason it should be used prior to any heat styling.) Blow dry the entire head and follow with curling. Starting with the nape of the head and using a 1-2" barrel curling iron, take sections about 1-1 1/2" partings and spiral loose curls throughout the entire head. Once completed, create a high side part and twist two small sections, gently pulling them toward the back of the head securing and hiding them under the curls with a small bobby pins.
This quick go to style can be achieved with freshly washed or “dirty” hair with any texture – it makes no difference! Create a side part and secure the hair at the nape of the head. Loosely twist the hair through the ends and wrap the hair in a circular motion creating a bun. Secure with bobby pins and you are ready to start your day.
Part the hair from ear to ear across the top securing the back with a hair tie (try the Mixed Chicks Spring Bands, $3). Create a side part and flat twist each side joining at the ponytail in the back and securing in the hair tie. Loosely twist or braid the remaining hair to the ends and wrap in a circular motion creating a bun. Finish with bobby pins and you are ready to go!
Loose Side Braid
This simple variation of the “Pocahontas braid” style is achieved by creating a side part and gathering all the hair to one side. Braid the hair loosely leaving approximately 2-2 1/2" of hair at the ends and securing with a small rubber band. After completing, you may shake the head to create a 'messy" tousled look!
