Have you been as obsessed with Shakira’s new short style as much as we have? Good news: We tracked down her hair stylist, Cynthia Alvarez, to find out exactly how to copy the fierce bob—plus the inside scoop on why the Colombiana made the big chop!
First, why Shaki went short:
“Shakira's new cut is a breath of fresh air for her. She just completed a world tour and I'm sure she wanted freedom from the extensive styling. This is definitely a cut that she can style herself. It has some flair with the asymmetrical element, the layers add some body so it doesn't weigh her face down, and of course she keeps it sexy with an eye- skimming fringe,” Cynthia says.
Why you might want to, too:
“First and foremost, to pull off Shakira's new cut, you have to be ready for a change! This bob isn't for the faint at heart,” says Cynthia. “It's an excellent choice for the woman who is ready to conquer the world with an air of confidence.”
Ready to go for it? Here’s what to tell your stylist:
“Bring pictures!,” Cynthia advises. “Also, tell your stylist to customize the cut to fit you. This might include additional layers and adjustment in length and fringe to suit the shape of your face, and to place the side part on your good side.”
The secrets to keeping it look as hot as Shakira’s:
After you shampoo and condition, prep your damp hair with a styling foam (Cynthia uses Motions Light Styling Foam, $3.99, Walgreens.com, which she says is perfect because it’s lightweight, but holds your style in place). Now, blow dry hair with a medium round brush. “The key is to keep the brush moving,” says Cynthia. Once the hair is completely dry, blow dry bangs, holding the brush in the direction you want the hair to fall and curling it so that it grazes your eye.
