Does your hair need some TLC? We asked Twisted Sista beauty expert and CEO Stephen Durham for all the info you’ll need to help you get shape up those strands. We think your mane will appreciate it.
What is the best to protect your hair from heat if you straighten it?
Use a thermal protector! It protects your hair from heat damage, eliminates frizz and locks in shine. It’s really important to protect your hair.
My hair is curly or tight -- how can I loosen my curls to look softer?
First, you should always make sure your hair is well moisturized. Second, never brush your hair, as it will make it frizzy, so always use a comb! Don’t wash your hair every day; try every three to four days to keep moisture and use a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner.
A good way to get curls looking soft is to dampen hair lightly (you can use a leave-in conditioner) and then braid your hair loosely into large braids. Leave overnight and take them out in the morning. Done! For even looser curls, add some serum to your hands and comb through your curls with your fingers.
What is the best color that compliments morenita (light brown skin) for the summer? I want to add some color, but I don’t know what color to choose!
Durham recommends either a shade of blonde or red -- but when it comes to adding color you should always consult a colorist at your local salon!
What are the best products for maintaining natural curls?
The following products for natural curls would include a sulphate-free, paraben-free shampoo and conditioner for cleansing and conditioning. You might also want to try a leave-in conditioner (which protects against UV damage), a curl activator (to create and moisturize your curls) and serums (to smooth away frizz and block humidity).
I have long straight hair and I want to add a style to it. I have an oval face… what should I do?
If you have an oval face shape, stop and congratulate yourself, you have the most versatile face shape and you can wear almost any hairstyle! Sofia Vergara, Rihanna, Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry – they all have oval face shapes. Just make sure your hair is in great condition, looking healthy, full of bounce and shine. Then pop into your salon and consult with your stylist.
What is the best cut for curly hair below the shoulders?
In terms of cut, Durham suggests long layers. This should take your hair from looking bulky and puffy and even it all out.
How often is it good to apply a Glaze to your hair?
Once a month or between salon color visits.
I have thin and straight hair – how can I give it volume?
The easiest way would be to blow dry your hair upside down, then flick your hair forward and back, then comb and finish with a medium hold hair spray. Blow-drying your hair upside down will also step up the blood flow to enhance healthy hair growth.
What products can you recommend for curly haired chicas that live in hot and very humid areas of the world?
The products Durham recommends for curly girls are conditioning masks, leave-in conditioners, serums and anti-frizz hairsprays. Prevent your hair from becoming frizzy by prepping your hair with lightweight styling products; once you have styled your hair, lock everything in with either an anti-frizz hairspray or a serum.
For hot climates, you also always want to keep your hair hydrated with a leave-in conditioner and cut down on using heat styling appliances. This will in turn cut down the frizz.
How do you make your hair always look thick and healthy when it’s not?
Looking to get great, healthy hair? It starts with your lifestyle. Here are some things to keep in mind:
Diet plays a vital role in making your hair thick; to increase the thickness of your hair, make sure that your diet contains enough protein.
Omega 3 fatty acids
Increase your Omega 3 fatty acids. These are primarily found in fish and fish oil supplements. They are extremely helpful in preventing hair fall and making your hair thick and healthy.
Biotin is a vitamin that is highly beneficial in promoting hair growth and thickness.
Finally, always use a protein based shampoo and conditioner.
What is the best way to maintain that shine on your hair after highlights and coloring during summer months?
There are a couple of ways to keep your hair shiny in the summer. First, avoid shampooing your hair in hot water. Cold water keeps your hair cuticles closed and your color intact! Giving your hair a final cold rinse will also increase the shine. Second, always use styling products that have UV protection (all Twisted Sista products have UV protection). Why? Simply put, UV rays from the sun remove the color out of your hair. Yeah, no good.
How can I get my hair to be less frizzy when going out?
You can either use a serum or an anti-frizz shine hair spray…both of which can be popped in a bag and can be done on the go.
