Demi Lovato's Hairstylist Reveals Her #1 Hair Secret

Demi is a hair chameleon! Do you recommend changing your hair color so often?

Demi is definitely a hair chameleon! The reason why her hair isn't really damaged by all of this change is due to a schedule we create. It's not like bam! She's blonde in a day. I will lighten her hair till it tells me to stop, and from there will tone at the level she is at. That is also why she is able to go through different colors, she's in different stages a lot of the time.

What's the least damaging way to change up your color?

You have to be open to not achieving your ideal color right away. That way you can treat your hair in between. Do services like the Keratin Complex Express Blowout to replace keratin protein lost through lightening or to fill the hair before going darker. It's really important to establish a hair color and treatment schedule so your hair wont fall out or turn funky colors!

What would you say to a client who is interested in changing up their look but doesn't know what color to go with?

I think the easiest way for someone to go through a hair change is to first determine what tones will look good on their skin tone. It's always good to have different wefts of hair shades at the salon to help you with that process. Once that is established you can start a change by taking a client either 2 shades darker or 2 shades lighter. That is just enough so the client doesn't get overwhelmed.

If you have someone is your chair that really scared to make a drastic change, I always recommend a few highlights that way if they don't like it, they can easily dye it back to their original color.
