When summer starts to become muy caliente, it can mean clogged pores, breakouts, oily patches and a multitude of other problems for your face. Have no fear though—we enlisted one of NYC’s top dermatologists, Dr. Doris Day, to solve these issues for you. See below for her top tips for caring for your skin in the summer.

What are your best tips for women with oily/combination skin?

Don’t over-do it! Excessive scrubbing won't make acne go away and can actually cause skin to overproduce oil. Try to limit yourself to 2 washings per day; anything more than that can leave the skin dry and irritated. Also, continue to treat chronic skin conditions like acne by working with your dermatologist. Your doctor can give you a prescription treatment like ACZONE® [link to:], which contains the active ingredient topical dapsone and is not a retinoid, topical antibiotic or benzoyl peroxide, plus it doesn’t make your skin worse before it gets better and it isn’t known to cause sun sensitivity.

Since we tend to want to wear less makeup during the hot summer months, but might have acne, how do you recommend finding a balance with your products?

I recommend that my patients move away from heavy moisturizers and switch to lighter non-comedogenic lotions and serums. Tinted moisturizers and BB creams can do double duty. Prescription ACZONE® can be worn under makeup, so you can still treat your acne while wearing makeup.

Do we have to apply extra SPF if our CC and BB creams already have it in them?

I recommend using an additional SPF 30. The important thing to remember is to reapply every few hours if you’re outdoors. For acne-prone skin, I recommend mineral sunscreen, which sits on top of the skin rather than being absorbed.

When switching your winter beauty products over for summer, what should you store for the next season and what should you toss?

What’s important is to be mindful of expiration dates and store them in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

What are your tips for dealing with pigmentation or acne scaring?

Chemical peels are a fantastic way to keep skin fresh and bright and you can work with your medical aesthetician to address pigmentation. I also recommend combining this with the Clear & Brilliant laser [link to:], which is a favorite among my patients because it has minimal downtime. For acne scarring, I often recommend microdermabrasion (a blast of fine inert crystals).

What are your thoughts on drinkable sunscreens hitting the markets?

It’s a big claim and I have not seen any evidence-based scientific data. I’m waiting to see the data and for FDA approval. Until then, I would not recommend.

How do you treat dryness along the ridge of your nose if you’re moisturizing already?

The first step would be to check with your dermatologist to rule out medical conditions like rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis. Otherwise, if you’re moisturizing properly than make sure you are drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated. It could also be due to sun exposure, so make sure to properly apply sunscreen as it’s an easy place to miss.
