The Funky Reverse Braid
If you can French braid your hair, you can do this ‘do. It just takes a little patience. Start by flipping your head upside down and begin braiding at the nape of the neck and continue to the ends of your hair. Tuck the pony part of the braid under and use bobbi pins to secure.
The Retro Bob
You don’t need shoulder length hair to sport this look. Just curl your hair with a 1-inch barrel iron—curls should go away from the face—and tuck locks under. Use U-shaped bobbi pins to hold hair in place. TIP: If you need help rolling your hair, try the Sarah Potempa Wrap Up, $12, sarahpotempa.com.
The Oversized Pony
There’s no way around it—this look requires a few extra strands of hair. Start by adding a light hold hair gel into dry locks and then slick back into a high pony. Next, add in a ponytail hairpiece like the Hairdo by HairUWear Simply Straight Pony, $49, extensions.com. Once it’s in, tuck ends into the elastic to give your pony a bit more oomph. Finish with a two-inch hair extension piece to wrap around the base, hiding the elastic.
The Pretty Pouf
Start with a volumizing mousse in damp locks before blowdrying with a round brush. Once hair’s fully dry, use a comb to tease the hair at the crown of your head. Section out the middle portion and push forward, then secure with bobbi pins. Next, take the hair starting just at the top of ears and pull into a half pony. For curls that will stay perky through the last dance, go through and re-curl two-inch sections with a large barrel curling iron. Finish with a strong hold hairspray like L’Oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray, $15, lorealparisusa.com.
The Modern Ballerina
The key to this look is to make sure your hair is completely smooth before tying it into a pony. Along your hairline, try Smooth N Shine Polishing Olive and Tea Tree Revivoil Instant Edge Smoothing Pomade, $4, drugstore.com, to keep baby hairs down. Once hair is secure, spray with hairspray to tame any flyaways. Next, wrap hair into a bun by holding the pony at the very end and twisting it around the base. Use U-shaped pins to secure. If you have layers, a few pieces may stick out but that’s okay. It gives the look its modern flair.
The Accessorized Updo
This style is great if you have bridesmaids with short hair or long with lots of coils. If hair is short, curl hair and slip on a headband. It’s that simple! If hair is long, either smooth natural curls (try Bumble and Bumble Defrizz, $27, bumbleandbumble.com) and pin into a loose low bun, or for the straight-haired, you can use a small-barreled curling iron to create the look of natural rizos.
The Boho Braid
What makes this style interesting is the ribbon threaded into the braid. Ask your seamstress to save any fabric cut from your bridesmaid dresses when she’s doing alterations. That way, you’ll have an exact match. Or, if you’re going more non-traditional, give each girl a different color ribbon for fun pops of color.
The Bun Trifecta
Gotta love a hairstyle that looks way more complicated than it is. If you look closely, Demi’s look is actually just three tiers of buns. Use a texturizing spray in damp locks before blowdrying. Then section hair into three horizontal pieces: one at the middle center of the crown, one from ear to ear and the third is whatever’s remaining. Twist each section into a bun and secure with pins that are the same color as your hair.
The Low-maintenance ‘Do
If you don’t want to spend a lot of time in the salon, try this look that works with your natural texture. Just tie locks into a low pony but when pulling through on the last loop, leave ends tucked in. Use your fingers to pull hair apart to give it a more textured look.
The Girly Side Bun
For a summer wedding when the temps are high, you’ll want to keep all hair off your neck. To get this look, blowdry locks smooth, create a deep side part, then pull hair into a side pony just above your ear. Wrap hair into a loose bun and secure with bobbi pins. Mist with a finishing spray to keep any flyways down.
